Storing red wine – key principles

Published by Jerzy Ożóg on

Red wine is one of the world’s most popular drinks,
appreciated for its rich flavours and aromas. However, to fully enjoy its qualities,
proper storage is key. Unsuitable conditions can destroy even the most expensive and exquisite wines.
So how do you ensure that a bottle of red wine retains its quality? Here are some key principles:

  1. temperature – the golden mean

Red wine is best stored at a stable temperature between 12°C and 18°C.
Higher temperatures can accelerate the ageing process, which can be detrimental for younger wines.
Conversely, temperatures that are too low can inhibit the development of aromas.
It is also important to avoid rapid temperature changes, which can damage the cork and allow air into the bottle.

  1. storage position – ageing matters
Bottles of red wine should be stored horizontally.
This keeps the cork moist, which prevents it from drying out and allows the bottle to be sealed tightly.
A dry cork can allow air to pass through, leading to wine oxidation and spoilage.

3 Protection from light
Light, especially sunlight, is the enemy of wine.
UV rays can destroy the delicate chemical compounds responsible for flavour and aroma.
Therefore, wine should be stored in a dark place, away from windows or strong lighting.
If you do not have a suitably dark cellar, it is worth considering storing in special cabinets or covering the bottles with fabric.

4 Constant humidity
The air humidity in the wine storage area should be between 50% and 80%.
Air that is too dry can cause cork to dry out, while excess moisture promotes mould growth on labels and bottles.
Maintaining adequate humidity ensures a longer shelf life for the liquor and an aesthetically pleasing appearance for the bottle.

  1. protection against vibration
Constant vibrations can interfere with the maturation process of the wine, breaking down sediment and changing the structure of the liquor.
Therefore, it is important to keep the storage area free of vibrations – avoid storing wine near washing machines,
    loudspeakers or in high-traffic areas.

6 Storing in the right places
The ideal place to store red wine is in a wine cellar.
However, if you do not have this option, you can invest in a wine cooler,
which will allow you to control the temperature and humidity. Avoid keeping your wine in the kitchen,
where temperature and humidity fluctuate frequently.

7 Consumption at the right time
Not every red wine benefits from ageing. Wines intended for quick consumption should be consumed within a few years of purchase.
If you plan to store wine for longer, make sure it is a wine with the right ageing potential,
usually those with higher tannins and acidity.

Summary
Storing red wine is an art that requires the right conditions and attention.
A stable temperature, a horizontal position of the bottles, protection from light and humidity –
all of these contribute to preserving the quality of the wine. By taking care of these aspects, you can be sure,
that every bottle you open will taste exactly as its creator intended.

Remember these rules and your wine collection will not only look impressive,
but will also provide an unforgettable taste experience! 🍷
